091111 Internet Handholding, DotNetNuke, Social Bookmarking

Hello Business Website Customers, Associates and Friends,

If you are receiving this for the first time, I may have added you to
this list as way to stay in touch and because I thought you might find
something useful. If you do not want to receive this newsletter, reply
to this email with "dns" (do not send) in the subject.

Would like to help your website get found. Have added a new section to
the newsletter to feature your websites. If you would like your website
featured, let me know. This newsletter gets posted online in a couple
of places. By featuring your website, you get a couple of one-way links
back to your website that should help your search rankings.

Since this summer, I have been moving my websites and my customers
to DotNetNuke and I am more and more pleased with this product. We
recently implemented the forum module for a customer and it is great.
Have added a forum to the www.InternetHandholding.com website so you
can see how the module works. Feel free to post anything you like there.
When you post, always include a link back to your website to help your
search engine rankings.

You can see a couple of DotNetNuke websites I stumbled across here.
www.fortsmithmoms.com - Fort Smith Moms club
www.ocso.com - Orange County Sheriff's Office

If you need a website or want to switch to DotNetNuke, let me know.

Be Happy, Healthy and Prosperous,
Andrew

1. Article: Write, Write, Write

There is no accounting for taste when it comes to Google.

When I was in high school and college, I avoided every class
that required my writing papers. Maybe it was only my aversion
to homework, because somewhere along the way I became a writer.

I found myself writing journals at home and procedure documents
at work, which has turned out to be a useful Internet skill.

Nobody bothered to read what I wrote, but that does not matter
to Google. Google is only interested in quantity of keywords.

Google will read everything you write, index every keyword and
possibly show a link to your page to applicable searches.

If you want to get found, write a lot of keywords.

-----------------------------------------------------------
2. Article: DotNetNuke Tip - Use the Articles Module and Categories

The articles module in DotNetNuke is convenient for publishing
your writings on your website.

You can go into the Administrator Options and set up categories,
which should help with keywords for searches.

As frequently as you are able, write something. Use keywords in
the title, because the articles module is SEO friendly and will
use the keywords in the page url, which helps your page get found.

Write something useful for your audience. Share your expertise.
You can add value for your existing customers and maybe someone
new will come across your writings.

-----------------------------------------------------------
3. Article: Massive Link Building to Grow Traffic

If you want to get more visitors to your website, your should
plan on link building. Ten or twenty links is not enough. You
should expect to get hundreds of incoming links.

First go to the Google keyword tool here.
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordTool

Find a list of keywords that you want to target.
Use the Exact Match criteria.

It is best if the keywords are in your domain name.

You then need to create your page content around the keywords.

When you create links, include the keywords in your incoming
linking text.

You can read a little about getting incoming links through Social Bookmarking
and directories on this page.
www.internethandholding.com/Members/LinkBuildingandBookmarking.aspx

If you are a member in www.InternetHandholding.com you can
find there a list of many bookmarking websites and directories.
The more places you place links back to your website the better.

For starters, submit your website to these directories:
www.bing.com
www.dmoz.com
www.google.com
www.yahoo.com

Sign up for accounts and post bookmarks to your website at some of these:
www.delicious.com
www.digg.com
www.faves.com
www.stumbleupon.com

Exchange links with other websites that have a similar audience.
Below are two sample emails.

You can see, one of the nice things about having keywords in
the domain name is those keywords are automatically included
in the link.

--------------------------------
Sample 1 - Wait for them to reply before adding their link
--------------------------------

Subject: [other website] Link exchange

Hello [other website],

Would you like to exchange links?

Our websites are complimentary and of mutual
interest to both our audiences.

If you would like to exchange links, place a link to
www.aaaaaaa.com on your website.

You can copy and paste this html.

<a href="http://www.aaaaaaaaaa.com" target="_blank">aaaaaa aaaaa.com
- key word, key word, key word, key word</a>

Email us your link information. Include:

1.The URL of your page to which you want us to link
2.The URL of your page which links back here
3.What you want our link to you to say
4.Your name and email

Thank you.

Regards,
[you]

--------------------------------
Sample 2 - Add their link first
--------------------------------

Subject: [other website] Link exchange

Hello [other website],

Would you like to exchange links?

interest to both our audiences.

We have added a link to your website which you can find here.

Error logging for asp.net

See http://code.google.com/p/elmah/

ELMAH (Error Logging Modules and Handlers) is an application-wide error logging facility that is completely pluggable. It can be
dynamically added to a running ASP.NET web application, or even all ASP.NET web applications on a machine, without any need for
re-compilation or re-deployment.
Once ELMAH has been dropped into a running web application and configured appropriately, you get the following facilities without
changing a single line of your code:

.Logging of nearly all unhandled exceptions.

.A web page to remotely view the entire log of recoded exceptions.

.A web page to remotely view the full details of any one logged exception.

.In many cases, you can review the original yellow screen of death that ASP.NET generated for a given exception, even with
customErrors mode turned off.

.An e-mail notification of each error at the time it occurs.

.An RSS feed of the last 15 errors from the log.

DotNetNuke 5.1.2 Missing HTML module

After installing DotNetNuke 5, I went to add the HTML module to a page, but the HTML module was missing from the module drop down
list.

Do not know why this problem occurred.

To fix the problem, I went to:

1. Host, Module Definitions, Install Module at the bottom

2. Browsed to the folder Install, Module and uploaded HTML_Community_05.01.03_Install.zip

The module installed with no problem.

One time this happened, there was a HTML_Community_05.01.03_Install.resources file, but not .zip version. I renamed the .resources
to .zip and uploaded and everything was fine.

DotNetNuke Free Skins

I am only just starting to look at DotNetNuke skins.

This website looks like a good place to start for free skins.
www.dnnskins.com

Somewhere it says that Nina's first DotNetNuke skin, the first skin on this page, is still the most downloaded.

If you click on the first DotNetNuke skin and you get to here

where there seems to be a somewhat helpful explanation.

1. Article: DotNetNuke

DotNetNuke is a website content management application that lets
you update your websites yourself.

How easy is it.

With DotNetNuke, the next time you are looking at your website
and see something you want changed, all you need to do is click
on the little edit icon next to the entry and make your changes.

If you make a mistake, no problem, there is a recyle bin.

When Bill Gates stepped down from running the business of Microsoft
he made himself head of technology. He had a vision of how software
could work together, which he called Dot Net.

To showcase the power of Dot Net, Microsoft wrote the precursor to
DotNetNuke and gave it away for free. Other people since, with
Microsoft support, have taken over the project.

DotNetNuke is a phenomenal content management system that lets an
ordinary person's website have the power of the most sophisticated
websites.

Whether your website is one page that only changes occassionally
or a complex interactive website with lots of updaters, or anything
in between, DotNetNuke is by far the easiest way to manage your website.

Built on the Dot Net platform, DotNetNuke simplies management
both for the website owner and the technical support person.

DotNetNuke comes with a framework for your website, with menus,
user registration, logon, security, skins to change the appearance,
and many modules for different kinds of content.

There is a large add-on market of free and for-a-fee modules that
enhance DotNetNuke.

You can have announcements, blogs, events, forums, newsletters,
stores, wikis and much more, all with the latest website technology,
the equal of any of the most popular websites.

All of which is configurable to your tastes.

Built in are features that enhance your website for your visitors
with no work on your part. Visitors can search your entire website.
They can minimize sections of your page so they can more easily
see the content that they want.

DotNetNuke is search engine optimized. Plus, you can enable
comments, ratings and social bookmarking, to further help
your getting found on searches.

DotNetNuke is free. You can download and install DotNetNuke
yourself from www.DotNetNuke.com.

If you prefer, you can run your website on one of our DotNetNuke
installations. We take care of all the technical details. We buy
modules to enhance DotNetNuke and make them available to you. We
also train you and provide technical support. Contact us to get
running right away. See www.Webhosting.vg

2. Article: Free Tools Audacity and Paint

Microsoft has a lot of good programmers and they can write
a lot of software. As Windows was growing, Microsoft programmers
gobbled up more and more programs pulling them into Windows or
Office and giving them away for free with those products.

Many software companies that specialized in individual applications
went out of business as Microsoft swallowed up their fields.

After the lawsuits with Netscape and Quicken, Microsoft has
taken a different approach in certain instances, at least it
seems that way to me. One of these is with Paint.net.

Microsoft includes a weak graphics program called Paint with Windows.
Microsoft is capable of writing a graphics software package that could
put Photoshop and the rest out of business and give it away for free.
I imagine they might have one in-house, but I suppose to avoid more
lawsuits, they have avoided including one in Windows.

However, they supported the Paint.net project, which is a powerful,
free graphics program, which you can find here.
www.getpaint.net

Or if you prefer, you can try this free image editing program
www.gimp.org

For audio editing see the excellent and free Audacity
www.audacity.sourceforge.net

You can record and edit audio with no restrictions on length.

-----------------------------------------------------------
3. Article: Ftp Network Places

Are you using an Ftp program to update files on websites?

They are useful and I use them frequently, but another
convenient way to update online folders is using Windows
network places.

In the address bar of any Windows or Internet Explorer window,
type ftp:// followed by your website, like:

ftp://www.computergainesville.com

The first time, Windows will prompt you for your username
and password. You will then have opened another Windows
folder that works like any of your other Windows folders,
mostly.

-----------------------------------------------------------
4. Article: Copy From Left to Right

Developing good habits can save you time and avoid errors.
This is true in life and in your use of computers.

You can be more efficient and accurate by establishing
good procedures for yourself.

One I use is this.

Whenever I need to copy information from one place to another,
I put the window I am copying from on the left side of my
monitor. I put the window I am copying to on the right side
of my monitor.

I take a lot of photos and video. I copy them from my SD
card to an external hard drive. After I copy them I erase
them from my SD card.

This procedure helps me to keep everything straight so I
do not inadvertantly erase the files from the wrong place.

Short cut keys to move a window using the keyboard

Two-thirds of my Dell Inspiron 9200 17 inch wide, beautiful monitor is kaput. There was a manufacturing defect that caused many of
these laptop monitors to fail.

When I first noticed the problem, I checked with Dell, but I was out of the one-year warranty and they would not replace the screen.

The following year, they acknowledged the manufacturing defect and agreed to replace the monitors for free, within three years of
purchase. By the time I found out, my three years were up.

At first I had only lost the right two inches, so I was down to a 15 inch monitor. Still useable.

A couple of months ago, lost the left half of the screen, so now I am down to about a third strip on the right side, with some
vertical lines.

To buy a new monitor is about $300. Might as well buy a netbook.

Plugged an external monitor into the back and made the external monitor my primary display.

Most of the time this is fine, but if I happen to have the external monitor off when I turn on my computer, the laptop screen comes
up as the primary display.

I can right click and select properties in the working area, but the desktop settings open in the area of my screen that does not
work.

To move the window to the visible area, I need to move the window to the right using the keyboard. Here is how.

1. After opening the window, if no other windows are open and nothing else was done, the focus should be on the newly opened window.

2. Alt-spacebar should open the windows navigation drop down menu.

3. The m key should select the move function.

4. The arrow keys should move the window to the visible area, in my case, the right arrow.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type desk.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

2. Click the Settings tab, and then click the monitor that you want to use as the primary monitor.

3. Click to select the Use this device as the primary monitor check box if it is not already selected.

Note: The Use this device as the primary monitor check box is unavailable if you click the monitor that is currently set as your
primary monitor.

4. Click the monitor that you want to use as the secondary monitor.

5. Click to clear the Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor check box, and then click Apply.

090817 Internet Handholding, Laptop Ergonomics, Scams, Google

Hello Business Website Customers, Associates and Friends,

One of my customers lost a substantial amount of money to a
Nigerian internet scam. You would think I would know better,
but I helplessly watched a friend get scammed two weeks later.

Laptop keyboards are evil.

For a year www.JewishNetwork.com and www.DanceCalendar.info
were ostracized by Google. Not any more.

Be there in spirit even when you cannot be there in body.
Broadcast your events for your members.

If you need help with any of the things mentioned in the
articles, get in touch with me.

Be Happy, Healthy and Prosperous,
Andrew

1. Article: Scams

One of my customers lost a lot of money in a Nigerian internet scam.
Apparently, this is big business in Nigeria.

My customer is an intelligent, educated, sophisticated person, who
you would never think would get caught by one of these scams. I wrote
an article in another newsletter warning the readers.

Two weeks later I was helping a friend move. The movers told my friend
that her cost would be $5,000+, instead of the $1,500 quote. I knew
they were cheating her, but I could not figure out how the scam worked.
(Maybe because we had been up all night packing.)

My customer reported her loss to authorities and she is going
through a legal process, but she may not get anything back.

The next night I figured out how the moving scam worked and we managed
some damage control, but my friend had already left behind half her stuff
to lower her fees.

Searching on google turns up endless entries for Nigerian and moving
scams. Anyone can easily take a second to educate themselves.

My point is this, you can get scammed even when you know you are
getting scammed. Try not to lose too much money.

2. Article: Laptop Ergonomics

My right hand has been inflamed for six months.

Why? From the contortations my poor hand was making on the laptop
mouse pad, and reaching for the navigation and control keys
bunched together on the right side of the keyboard.

It is surprisingly easy to upgrade your work station and the
benefits are well worth the trouble.

Am now writing this on a full sized keyboard, with a regular mouse
at hand.

Have put my laptop on a wire stand, for better air flow to keep it cool,
and for viewing the monitor at eye level. Helps to improve my posture
for dancing.

Plugged in a second, external monitor that I had sitting around.
Nice to see two full sized windows at once.

Added a semi-permanent, external hard drive and moved all my media
files off the laptop drive. Cleaned up the laptop drive and registry,
and now my computer boots and runs much faster.

For as much as you and your employees use computers, anything you
can do to make your work station more comfortable has to be worth it.

Some upgrades for laptops:
- USB hub to give you more USB ports
- Full-sized keyboard
- Full-sized mouse with scroll wheel
- Raise the height of your laptop
- Second, external monitor
- Semi-permanent harddrive for media files
- Second external harddrive for backup of everything onsite
- Third external harddrive for offsite backup
- Fourth external harddrive for offsite backup rotation
Cannot have enough backup

-----------------------------------------------------------
3. Article: Google Follow Up

Previously I had written about the rankings of some of my
websites on Google. Here is a quick update.

www.JewishNetwork.com is now #1 on Google in searches for
"Jewish Events".

www.DanceCalendar.info is now on the first page in searches for
"Dance Calendar".

Being on the first page of Google is possibly the best way to get
found on the internet by people who do not already know you.

You can get your websites to the first page of Google if you
spend a little time doing the right things, such as:

- The right content, with matching key words,
internal links and content that grows
- Incoming links
- Keyword domain name
- Blogging

-----------------------------------------------------------
4. Article: Be Your Own TV or Radio Station

With the Internet, everyone can be their own TV or radio station.

YouTube is an easy way to get started. You can post videos up
to about ten minutes long. If you have an hour show, break it
into parts.

Live audio or video is more complicated and more expensive,
but not outrageous.

My friend Phil put in live, audio streaming at our synagogue
to broadcast the Friday night and Saturday morning services.
He set the system up to come on automatically before Shabbat
so that it is in keeping with Jewish law.

People like to tune in when they cannot make it to services
in person.

Another benefit is the recordings are archived, so people have
a record of their special occasions, like bar mitzvahs and
baby namings.

This has been a big success for our congregation.

Linkstar wants Advertising on Dancecalendar.info

Got the email below today to advertise on www.DanceCalendar.info

Found numerous posts about Linkstar.

Appears this is a way for them to build links to their websites to get higher rankings on search engines.

The ads are integrated into your page in a paragraph that is supposed to appear part of your normal copy, not as an advertisement,
with links to websites within the paragraphs.

The idea is that google will rank these links as more relevant for searches.

In this way, Linkstar could get a number of websites a high ranking for keyword searches that generate revenue.

Subject: Advertising on Dancecalendar.info

Hi,

I work for Linkstar, a leading broker of online advertising, dealing with many thousands of independent webmasters worldwide.

I've had a look at Dancecalendar.info and think that it would be a good match for our client, whose target demographic is similar to
your own. We're working on their behalf to acquire advertising from quality websites such as your own.

We would be interested in purchasing advertising in the form of a text-based advert on your site. To reduce unnecessary admin and
hassle, we prefer to pay a fixed annual fee for such advertisements. Once the ad has been placed, payment can be made quickly by
PayPal or Moneybookers.

If you are interested, please get back to me with your rates etc. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Kat

Lookup Microsoft updates

To find information about a particular Microsoft update

Deleting $NtUninstallKB folders in the Windows directory

In cleaning up space on my laptop, decided to look into whether it was safe to delete the $NTUninstallKB folders in the Windows
directories.

-----------------------------------------------------
Delete Microsoft Uninstall Update Files $NTUnistallKB
-----------------------------------------------------
There are many posts about this. These folders contain information that allows you to uninstall Microsoft updates.

If you are satisfied that an update is working on your computer and that you never want to remove that update, then you can delete
the folder for that update.

There will be a registry entry to list the update in Add/Remove programs. You can then go Add/Remove programs and click Remove. This
should give an error and then remove the entry from the registry.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE Add/Remove programs before you delete the folder or you will remove the actual update.

--------------------------------
Rename With @ to Make Deleteable
--------------------------------
If you are not sure, you can do what I do with all folders I am not sure about. I rename the folder, putting @date at the end. For
example, folder becomes folder@20090812.

My naming convention is that anything with an @ means it is deleteable at anytime.

The date tells me how long ago I made it deleteable. That way, after some time, if I never used the file, it is safe to delete.

--------------
Update Cleaner
--------------
You can buy Update Cleaner for $5 to delete the folder and remove the registry entry if you do not want to do it yourself.
www.pc-shareware.com/update.htm

--------
Ccleaner
--------
Crap Cleaner will also clean up these folders and registry entries. Ccleaner appears to delete them all or none, but not sure since
I did not try to use that feature. Update Cleaner lets you select which ones.

Ccleaner will analyze your computer for things to clean. This was useful. I had less than 1GB of the update files, so I did not
bother removing them.

Ccleaner cleans other things, including your registry.

VB Script to Delete Folder and Remove Registry Entry
----------------------------------------------------
There is an interesting entry from this page, with a script for deleting the folder and the entry in the registry for Add/Remove
programs.

|DataDirectory| in connection string

From
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlce/thread/dc31ea59-5718-49b6-9f1f-7039da425296

|DataDirectory| (enclosed in pipe symbols) is a substitution string that indicates the path to the database. It eliminates the need
to hard-code the full path which leads to several problems as the full path to the database could be serialized in different places.
DataDirectory also makes it easy to share a project and also to deploy an application.

For example, instead of having the following connection string:

"Data Source= c:\program files\MyApp\Mydb.sdf"

Using DataDirectory, you can have the following connection string:

"Data Source = |DataDirectory|\Mydb.sdf"

To set the DataDirectory property, call the AppDomain.SetData method. If you do not set the DataDirectory property, the following
default rules will be applied to access the database folder:

. For applications that are put in a folder on the user's computer, the database folder uses the application folder.
. For applications that are running under ClickOnce, the database folder uses the specific data folder that is created.

Hello Business Website Customers and Associates,

One of my customers had his website on AOL for years.
His website came up number 1 on Google for a particular
search and this is how he got a lot of his business.

AOL discontinued their website service.
When we brought his website up under his own name,
he was no where to be found on any searches and was
getting no business from his website.

See the first article for how we solved this problem.

If you have cleaned off your anti-virus software from your
computer, you are ready for the next stage, which is to free
up more of your computer memory so it can run faster. See the

1. Article: Back to the Top of Google

After enjoying years at the top of Google, AOL discontinued its
website service, which my customer had been using.

When we brought his website up under his own website name, it
was no where to be found on Google and he was getting no business.

Today I searched for "classical music records" and he came
up as the first one on page 2. That is #11 out of 6 million hits.

What did we do?

1. Got a domain name with keywords
- www.classicalrecords.biz

2. Updated his data regularly

3. Created a blog and linked to his website
- classicalrecords.blogspot.com

4. Linked to his website from a number of my websites

5. Linked to his website from some social bookmarking websites

My website www.JewishNetwork.com is up to #2 on Google for
searches for "Jewish events" out of 14 million hits. In an
earlier newsletter, you had heard that this website had been
unfairly dropped from Google for a year and we got it back
on by linking to it in a blog.

For another of my customers, we set up twenty, one page websites
with the domain name of the engine for which he sells parts.

These mini-websites simply say something like "For the
best XX400 engine parts at the best prices contact us or
visit our main website ..." and link back to his main website.

He is getting a fair amount of business from this.

Spending some time to help your website get found works.

-----------------------------------------------------------
2. Article: Clean Up Your System Tray

Look at the lower right hand corner of your computer.
This is called the System Tray.

Do you have a lot of icons down there?

Each of those icons represent a program running all the time on
your computer, taking up memory and slowing your computer down.

Some of these icons may indicate problems with your computer.

How did those icons get in your System Tray?

In some cases, presumptuous programs put themselves there when
they were installed. In some cases, these icons indicate things
you need to fix.

Do you need them in your System Tray?

Probably not most of them. Possibly not any of them.

What should you do about them?

If you know for sure you need it, leave it.
Otherwise, remove it from the System Tray.
If you find you miss it, you can always put it back.

Here is how to remove them from your System Tray.

Left click on an icon to open the program. See what it is.
If you do not absolutely need it running all the time,
remove it from the System Tray.

Find properties or settings for this program.
If you cannot find the settings, close the program and then
try right clicking on the icon. If you still cannot find settings,
go to your Start menu, Control Panel and look for settings for it.

Once you find the settings, look for a propery like:
- Place or Install in System Tray, or
- Automatically run when Windows starts

Turn that property off.

If the icon is still in the System Tray, right click on the icon
and click exit or close.

When you restart Windows, it should be gone.

Repeat for each of the icons.

3. Article: The Dog Whisperer

The Dog Whisperer is my favorite show.

Last weekend a young woman came up to me at the park.
She pointed to a lost dog. If a dachschund is a hotdog,
this dog would be a black and white bratwurst.

The dog sniffed my hand and took off before I could grab her,
trotting out of the park and down the street. The young woman
rode after her and I followed on foot.

You know how hard it is to catch a runaway dog.

Without a sound or gesture, from 50 yards away, I commanded
the dog to come to me.

That sounds absurd and I was as surprised as you would have been,
when that dog walked back across the street, crawled towards me
on her belly and rolled over on her back and waited for me.

I picked her up and dropped her off with the pool attendants,
who called her owner.

Thanks to Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, for explaining the
language of dogs. It can truly seem like a miracle when you
can communicate.

Free Windows registry cleaner

Here is a free registry cleaner.
http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm

Make sure you go to Start, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore and set a restore point first.

Revo free Windows uninstaller

Here is Revo free Windows uninstaller.
http://www.revouninstaller.com/

If you have problems uninstalling a program try this.

Make a system restore point first.

Cable modem needs a router

If you are using a cable modem you need to connect it
to a router instead of directly to your computer.

If you do not have the router, then you need to make sure your
computer's firewall is turned on and file and print sharing is
turned off. Without your own router, it is like connecting in
an airport or hotel. Your computer is safe if you follow these
precautions.

Internet ------ Cable Modem ----- Your Router ---- Your Computer
Firewall Firewall

A router cost about $50 and is set up with a firewall automatically.
You then have a secure network in your house. You can connect other
computers (if you have a visitor). You can safely use file and print
sharing.

In either case, you do not need anti-virus software, as Windows
comes with a firewall.

Hello Business Website Customers and Associates,

Over the last couple of months, I spent a lot of time
cleaning up computers for customers, relatives and friends.

Anti-virus programs are among the worst culprits in
cluttering your computer and hampering your productivity.

The articles below address anti-virus issues on Windows computers.

Andrew

-----------------------------------------------------------
1. Article: How to Not Get a Virus

There was a time when computers were vulnerable to viruses.

About 5 years ago Microsoft closed the remaining holes in Windows.

Today, as long as you keep Windows up-to-date,
and you use the default security settings,
you should not get anything bad on your computer.

To get something bad on your computer, you have to
install it yourself, usually by being tricked.

These are the ways you are likely to be tricked.
Here is what to watch out for.

1. Email zip attachments.

In Outlook, you can click on any email attachment safely,
including zip attachments.

However, programs can be included inside zip attachments.

Once you open up a zip attachment, do not click on
any programs inside, unless you specifically asked
someone to send you that program.

Be especially wary of zip attachments sent to you from
your boss and your customers. These are the ones you are
most likely to open by mistake.

2. Other attachment files with macros.

Excel spreadsheets and other attachments that can run
programs can harm your computer.

When you open these, they tell you that macros are disabled
by default. If you turn on macros, you put your computer at risk.

Only turn on macros if you know the source is safe.

3. Websites that say your computer is infected.

Websites cannot run programs on your computer unless you
click OK when asked if you want to run something.

Unless you trust a website, do not run any programs from it.

Websites that say your computer is infected are trying to
trick you. Do not run programs from them, unless you know
the website is legitimate.

-----------------------------------------------------------
2. Article: How to Remove a Virus

If you are tricked into installing a virus, you can restore
your computer to how it was before the infection.

Windows has a feature called System Restore that saves and
restores your computer's system settings.

To get into System Restore, go to Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.

When your computer is not infected with a virus, you should
occassionally create a restore point yourself.

In System Restore, select Create a Restore point, click Next
and save your current settings.

Windows by default automatically creates restore points before
installing Windows updates, so you should have some other restore
points already set.

If your computer becomes infected with a virus, go into
System Restore and select Restore My Computer From an Earlier Time.

Pick the most recent restore point before your computer was infected.

Run System Restore and the virus should be gone.

Run Windows Update after running System Restore to make sure
your computer is up-to-date. You can find Windows Update under
Start, All Programs.

----------------------------------------------------------
3. Article: Get Rid of Anti-Virus Programs

Article 1 above explains why you do not need an Anti-Virus
program to protect you.

Article 2 above explains why you do not need an Anti-Virus
program to remove viruses.

Anti-Virus programs actually make your computer more vulnerable,
because they prevent Windows from automatically keeping up-to-date.

Anti-Virus programs are instrusive, they slow your computer,
pop-up messages and interfere in the running of other programs,
all hampering your productivity.

Anti-virus programs cost money.

Remove your anti-virus software.

-----------------------------------------------------------
4. Article: Always Get Out of the Car

Picked up my niece from school today, and after annoying her
for a bit, I stopped by a couple of stores looking for something.
She said, "I will wait in the car."

I told her, she should always get out of the car.

"Always get out of the car" is one of those entries in my
version of that book that we all keep of Rules To Live By.

Even if it is only for a minute, I always try to get out
of the car. It makes me feel like I did something.

My niece reminded me of a story my dad told.

My dad had a factory in Live Oak. For fifteen years he drove
70 miles each way to and from work. He built the factory from
nothing to a big operation with hundreds of workers.

I used to work there in the summers and on school breaks.
From the outside all you could see were the corrigated steel
walls. Inside was an impressive place with hundreds of sewing
machines, cutting tables, a warehouse of fabrics and thousands
of finished shirts being shipped.

One day when we were coming back from a trip, my dad thought he
would swing by the factory so my sisters could see what my dad
had been doing all these years. He wanted to show off his factory
and made up an excuse that he needed to pick up something.

He pulled up to the factory door and said, "Do you want to
come in and see the factory?"

All they had to do was open the car door, get out and walk
ten feet to the factory door.

"Nah, we will wait in the car," my sisters said.

The publisher could not be verified

Microsoft security article
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=815141

Forum discussion

When trying to run a program off another computer on the network, you can get this error message "The publisher could not be verified" and then asks you to confirm. This is a pain if you are using a program regularly.

Ideally I would like to authorize this one program, but I have not yet found out how to do that.

Another solution is to lower the security settings on the Intranet zone and then add the file server with the program to the Intranet zone.

Nothing is in the Intranet zone automatically. Still, I do not like this solution because I only want to authorize the programs under one folder, not every program on everything that I ever add to the Intranet zone.

You can make these changes through Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Security.

You can also run gpedit.msc and go to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Attachment Manager

For the time being, I will live with the extra click to run the program rather than lower security on the Intranet zone.

090217 Websites Newsletter, Social Bookmarking, Blogging

Hello Business Website Customers and Associates,

We all want more visitors to our website, because that means more business.

One of the best ways to get more visitors is to show up at the top of searches.

See the article for some thoughts on how to get to the top.

If you would like us to do some work to help you get found, let me know.

What we will do is set you up with a blog and at least one bookmarking website. We will do all the needed configuration, make initial posts, link back to your website.

This should give you a serious head start on your competition, especially if your competition is regional. Few, if any, of your regional competition are doing this.

Be Happy, Healthy and Prosperous,
Andrew

1. Blog and bookmarking to help your website get found

When you can get to the first or second page on Google, your website is busy selling for you, without you having to do any work. What a great sales person.

Everyone wants to get to the top. However, the competition is not as tough as it might seem.

Few people are inclined to go to the touble to do the things it takes to get to the top, especially if you are operating in a regional or niche market.

My experiments with blogging have shown excellent results. A number of my websites are now on the first or second page of Google, at least one is number 1.

Here are some of the better results.

Website Search Words Rank Out of Hits
=================== ================ ============
- israelidancing.info israeli dancing 16/635,000
- israelipartnerdancing.com israeli partner dancing 1/264,000
- israelipartnerdancing.com partner dancing 9/4,320,000
- jewishnetwork.com jewish events 5/15,000,000
- partnershipdancing.com partnership dancing 2/2,380,000

Google keeps its algorithm a secret.

It seems, some of the key elements in getting highly ranked are:

1. Relevant to the search words
2. Quantity of content, preferably changing
3. Quantity of incoming quality links
4. Domain name
5. Incoming links from blogger
6. Age of domain registration
7. Page file name and path matching search terms

I have been experimenting with social bookmarking also and expect that to have a good result also.

Google can get you a lot of leads and you should take advantage of this marketing opportunity.

Beware that Google can also cut you off, so you cannot depend on Google. They can drop you at any time without notice and without giving you any recourse.

Develop your email list to keep your own online marketing channels open.

Business Websites Newsletter, Blogging - 090129

Hello Business Website Customers and Associates,

This is our second newsletter. Do not know yet what the frequency of these newsletters will be. The first one was about a month ago.

I have been experimenting with blogging. See below for more information.

Last newsletter we introduced email marketing. This is a reminder for you to keep email marketing on your to do list. Having a quality email list gives you more control over your business and lessens your dependence on other marketing channels. Specifically, if you have a good email list you are not as dependent on people finding you through Google.

Be Happy, Healthy and Prosperous,
Andrew

1. Blog to help getting your website found on google

Blogging is short for web log and is an online journal.

There are many benefits to blogging. One benefit is helping your website get found on google.

Blogger.com is owned by google. Google loves blogger.

If you have a blog on blogger.com, google will index your blog regularly.

On your blog you can put a link to your website. Google will find your website through blogger. This will help your page ranking on google.

To create a blog, go to www.blogger.com.

I have a blog for this newsletter.

1. Email List Marketing - Constant Contact

You should be gathering emails of your customers and prospects every chance you get.

These are the people that want to get information from you and want to buy from you, when the time is right. Stay in touch with them.

At a minimum, you should have email signup on your website.

Depending on your business, you can write to them anywhere from once a year to once a day. For most businesses, somewhere between once a week and once a month is probably the right number.

You can also send out special promotions anytime you like. If you are looking to generate some extra business by giving people a special deal, your email marketing list will be a great tool. This is one of the reasons people signed up with you.

You can maintain your email list by hand, if you have a small list, like I do for this one. I use an Outlook distribution list and send out a simple text email.

If you have a large list you can use an email list marketing provider. You can design fancy looking newsletters and they have reporting tools on how many people opened the newsletter.

The one I like is Constant Contact, so I signed up as a business partner. They are among the oldest and most well-respected email marketing providers. Here is my business partner link if you want to read more.

Web Hosting with Reliable Website Management

I have changed my web hosting service. I now offer two services.

- Business Website Management
- Business Website Support

This should allow me to actively support my website customers.

I want to do more than passively support them. In the past, a customer had me build and host their website, and that was the end of it unless they needed something done.

The problem was, my customers are not internet professionals and are not in a position to grow their business online.

What I want to do is actively support my customers by helping them to increase their online business.
